Seven Reasons God is Like Spanx
Is this sacrilegious? No, I firmly believe that God's character is made of an abundant sense of humor that accompanies His unending and unfailing grace and mercy. Seriously, have you read the story of Job or Noah? So here ya go, the seven reasons God is like Spanx.
- Just like Spanx, God has a way of making you look good on the outside. But, His 'Spanx' is not just about the physical. His transforming power is unlimited. You can exude the fruits of the Spirit from the inside out, shining His light. These fruits will show up as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, Galatians 5:22-23. Spanx does a great job on the outside, temporarily.
- God gives you confidence. Who doesn't need more confidence? His confidence isn't just about how you look in that new body-con dress. God gives you confidence in the day-to-day, the internal, and the eternal. Psalm 62:2, "He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken." Who doesn't need more confidence?
God is Your Confidence
- God supports you. He can be your constant companion in the good and bad. Spanx supports you in times of need (and thank goodness). What should you do if you can't sense His Presence? All you have to do is ask; He is always there. Psalm 118:7: "The Lord is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me."
- God meets you where you are. He loves you in all your imperfections, messes, and muffin tops. He is there in all of it. Spanx also doesn't care who you are, how big or small you may be: Spanx will be there. But God is already there in all of it.Romans 8:38-19 reminds you that you cannot be separated from God. "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
God's Got You
- God can speak to you in diverse styles and colors. He has a knack for communicating with each of you in a distinctly personal manner. He reveals Himself to each of you in unique ways. In Job 37:5, "God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding."We are "uniquely and wonderfully made," Psalm 139. Fortunately, He created you exactly as you are because He loves you. With Spanx, you get to choose everything. As much as you love your Spanx, they will perform only one role, regardless of color or style.
- God removes our shame and guilt. Psalm 35:4 states, "Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame."This may seem a little far-fetched, but Spanx does offer some temporary relief. Jesus’ work on the Cross is permanent.Matthew 11:28 clearly states, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." So, you can leave all that shame and guilt with Him. And you don't have to carry that around any longer.
- Finally, He hems you in and pulls you together, even when you don't think it's possible. Isn't the whole point of Spanx to pull in some of the bumps and curves? God will seek you out and lovingly bring you back to His fold. Then, He will keep you on His straight path again and again, regardless of the mountains, hills, or valleys we encounter. "I instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths." Proverbs 4:11.
God is Incomparable
Our great God is really incomparable, and the comparison is light-hearted. However, it serves as a reminder of the depth of His love, support, and transforming power over all the ragged edges of your life. And, even when you think you are irreparable, God uses your mess to become your message. Spanx is great at enhancing our outward selves, yet God's work on your heart will shine forever, with or without Spanx.
